By the end of this lesson, you’ll be able to:
- Name the three scrum roles and identify their accountabilities
- Provide examples of how the three roles collaborate as part of the scrum team
- State how each member of the scrum team is integral to its success
What is a scrum team?
A scrum team is a cross-functional group of individuals who work together to deliver a product or service. Scrum teams work in sprints, short periods of focused work that produce a useable increment of the product or service they deliver. No single individual will take on all of these roles at once, but having an understanding of each of the roles will help you to identify the right people to assign to each role.
A product is a vehicle for delivering valuable outcomes.
Who is on the scrum team?
The scrum team is made up of three accountabilities. These are the scrum master, the product owner, and developers.

A scrum master ensures that the scrum team are as effective as possible. They assist the product owner, developers, and organization in various ways.
They mentor and coach the scrum team, as well as the wider organization, in scrum practices.
A scrum master also helps the team identify barriers and blockers and coaches the team to resolve them.
The scrum master and the product owner form a crucial partnership. They collaborate to embody the scrum and agile values, develop strategies for efficient backlog management, engage with stakeholders, and effectively communicate the vision, priorities, and goals to the team.
Who leads the scrum team?
Scrum is a highly collaborative way of working and all members of the scrum team are equal. Scrum only works if everyone has mutual respect for each other, and are aligned to the same goal with open lines of communication.
Let’s explore a scenario at ElectroVolt Dynamics, a cutting-edge manufacturing plant dedicated to the production of electric vehicles. The team in question is responsible for optimizing production line processes. They are nearing the end of their current sprint.
