Update app URLs and the landing app
10 min
By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:
- Customize the app URL
- Identify the landing app
- Assign the landing app
Change the app URL using a subdomain
App URLs allow users to easily share links to specific places, spaces, work items, boards, or dashboards, enabling collaboration and efficient project management.
👉 For example: Acme organization has Confluence on acmeus site. The site URL is acmeus.atlassian.net and the app URL for Confluence is acmeus.atlassian.net/wiki.
In Atlassian Cloud, the subdomain of an app URL is the part before atlassian.net. Only org admins can change an app URL’s subdomain.
👉 For example: The Green Mountain organization has the app URL greenmountain.atlassian.net/wiki. “greenmountain” is the subdomain of the site URL.
The site where you are making the change has to have Jira or Confluence app with a standard, premium, or enterprise plan. When you change URLs, the old URL will not be available for other sites. For that reason, you can't change to a URL that’s already in use or was used previously. Users visiting the previous URL are redirected to the new one. You can change an app URL up to 3 times only, after that the Update URL button will be greyed out. The URL change is for the entire site, you can't change the URL for each app separately in your site.
To change the app URL subdomain:
- Go to admin.atlassian.net and select an organization.
- Expand Apps then select App URLs from the sidebar in the admin hub.
- In the Default URLs tab, select Update URL for the site.
- Enter the new subdomain then select Continue.
- After reading the warning, select Update.
Change the app URL using a domain
You can only add a custom domain for Jira Premium, Confluence Premium or Jira Service Management Standard. Custom domain allows teams to access their Atlassian Cloud instances using a URL that reflects their own domain name rather than the default Atlassian-provided domain. Only org admins can add a custom domain, but only to Atlassian apps with paid plans.
👉 For example: Users of Acme organization can access Atlassian apps on go.help.acme.com rather than acme.atlassian.net.
Adding custom domains may impact apps and integrations used in Jira Service Management. You can't use a domain name that’s in use. The unique domain should also be public to ensure that customers who need the help desk can access all information. The fully qualified domain name needs to follow a specific format: subdomain2.subdomain1.site.com. Applinks use the default URLs instead of the custom domain URL.
To add a custom domain:
- Go to admin.atlassian.net and select your organization.
- Expand Apps then select App URLs from the sidebar in the admin hub.
- Select the Custom domains tab.
- From the top right of the page, select Add custom domain.
- Select Next then from the App dropdown select the app.
- Select Next again.
- Enter your domain details following the specified format.
- Optionally, enter a Redirect URL.
- Select Next.
- Review and select Create domain.
The custom domain might take up to 30 minutes to be ready for use.
Changing the help center domain won't automatically change any email addresses associated to the help center. You can manage them directly in your Jira Service Management spaces.
Choose a landing app
When users access a site, they will land in a specific app, which can either be Confluence or Jira. An org admin decides which app users will land in.
To set the landing app for a site:
- Go to admin.atlassian.com and select your organization.
- Expand Apps then select Atlassian apps from the sidebar in the admin hub.
- From the menu next to Add app, select Update landing app.
- In this window, you can select the Landing app for each site in your organization.
- Select Update.
If a user doesn't have access to the landing app of your site, they will still land in the selected app; however, they will see a prompt to request access to the app.
