Create a board in Jira

5 min

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:

  • Compare scrum and kanban boards
  • Describe the relationship between boards and spaces
  • Create a board in your space

What types of boards can you create?

There are only two types of boards in Jira: kanban boards and scrum boards.
👇 Click the tabs below to explore the two kinds of boards.
Kanban boards don’t have fixed time intervals. New work moves into the board continuously as the team completes other work.
👇Here’s an example of a kanban board.

Relationship between boards and spaces

👇 Click the boxes below to explore the relationship between boards and spaces.

For users to see all of the work in a board, they need to have Browse projects permission for all included spaces.

Create a board

Because you can create a board using data from one or more spaces, you’ll create boards from the Boards page. You can access the boards page from the search bar.
To create a board:
  1. From any page, click the search bar.
  2. At the bottom of the search window, click Boards.
  3. In the top-right, click Create board.
  4. Choose Create a Scrum board or Create a Kanban board, based on your needs.
  5. Choose to create a board based on a new space, existing space, or existing filter, then click Next.
    1. If you create a board based on a new space, enter the space details for your new space.
    2. If you create a board based on an existing space, name your board, select one or more existing spaces, then select which space the board should be visible in.
    3. If you create a board based on an existing filter, name your board, select an existing filter, then select which space the board should be visible in.
  6. Click Create board.
👇You can access the Boards page from the sidebar.
