Best practices for recording in Loom

10 min

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:

  • Adjust your appearance and sound
  • Blur parts of your screen to hide sensitive data
  • Capture a screenshot using Loom
  • Produce an effective video following recording best practices

Enhance your camera recording

Recording your face is recommended to make your video feel more personal. Loom puts your camera into a circle shape on the screen, called a cam bubble. The cam bubble can be moved around, resized, and customized to fit your personality and the needs of your video.
If desired, you can add a background to your cam bubble in the desktop and Chrome extension recorders. The desktop recorder also has fun cam bubble frames.

Improve your lighting, sound, and appearance

In the desktop app, there are a few helpful recording settings that you can turn on before you start recording to automatically improve the look and sound of your recording.
  • Auto lighting: Automatically adjusts for low-light recording environments.
  • Noise filter: Automatically filter out unwanted background noise. This is great if you need to record in a noisy environment, such as a coffee shop or shared office space.
  • Touch up my appearance: An adjustable setting to soften the camera focus to help you feel “red carpet” ready.
👇 In the desktop app, go to settings to access the enhance features.

Automatic lighting adjustments, noise filtering, and touch up your appearance features are only available in the desktop recorder.

Hide unwanted items from your screen recording

You can blur out parts of your screen in your recording to hide sensitive or private information, such as internal data or customer information. These areas must be set before you start recording. The blur effect cannot be added after recording is complete.
👇 Watch this video to see how to blur parts of your screen using the Chrome extension.

The blur feature is only available with the Chrome extension recorder.

Hide your recording controls

If you want your video to look a little more polished, you can hide the recording controls (the floating panel with buttons for start, stop, etc.) from your video.

Capture and share a screenshot

Using the Loom desktop app, you can capture a quick screenshot right from the pre-recording menu. No need to use another screenshotting program.
To take a screenshot:
  1. Open the pre-recording menu and select Screenshot on the top toolbar.
  2. Choose between Custom area or Full-screen for your screenshot type.
After you capture your screenshot, Loom will show your screenshot on the bottom right of your screen. You can directly copy the shareable link or edit the screenshot in Loom. Your screenshots will be stored in the Screenshot tab within your Library.
